FAQs
The questions we are asked most about Gower, Epilog Cloud and Deceased Online.
About Gower
Who we are and how we work.
Who are Gower?
Gower has built software for bereavement services since 1982. We make Epilog Cloud, the platform councils and private operators use to run cemeteries and crematoria, and Deceased Online, which preserves burial and cremation records online. Manuscripti, also part of the group, restores and digitises historic records.
Do you work with private operators as well as councils?
Yes. Gower works with bereavement services in councils and private organisations alike, from a single cemetery to many sites.
Where are you based, and where is our data hosted?
Gower is a UK company, and Epilog Cloud is hosted in UK data centres.
Is Gower certified?
Yes. Gower holds ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certification and Cyber Essentials, and is listed on G-Cloud 15.
Can we buy through G-Cloud?
Yes. Gower is listed on G-Cloud 15, so public sector organisations can buy from us through the Digital Marketplace.
How do we get started?
Get in touch and tell us what you need, whether that is Epilog Cloud to run your service, bringing your registers onto Deceased Online, or digitising records with Manuscripti. We will talk it through with your own services in mind.
Epilog Cloud
Running your bereavement service on Epilog Cloud.
What is Epilog Cloud?
Epilog Cloud is our platform for running cemeteries and crematoria. It brings records, bookings, finance, mapping, assets, documents and reporting together in one place, used in a web browser.
Do we need to install anything?
No. Epilog Cloud runs in the browser, so your team signs in and starts working. There are no servers to look after.
How do we move from our current system?
We migrate your existing data, give you a sandbox for acceptance testing, and go live with you. The sandbox stays available afterwards for ongoing training and development.
How are updates delivered?
Continuously. Epilog Cloud is one platform kept current for everyone, so new features and improvements arrive without upgrade projects or installs.
Can funeral directors book online?
Yes. Connect gives funeral directors a portal of their own where they can request a service in the slots you make available. Requests arrive as pending and your team confirms them.
Can coroners and medical referees use Epilog Cloud?
Yes. Coroners and medical referees have their own portal showing the records assigned to them, as a task list.
Does Epilog Cloud produce our statutory returns?
Yes. The CIPFA burial return, and the FBCA and CMA returns for cremation, are produced from your records, with an editable print preview for the declaration and signature, and a CSV of the figures.
We only have paper plans of our cemeteries. Can we still use the maps?
Yes. A scanned or photographed plan can be scaled and lined up over a real map by hand. GIS files, aerial imagery and drone surveys can be brought in too.
Can we make the forms match the way we work?
Yes. Any field can be renamed, made required or hidden, and you can add fields of your own, separately for each type of service. Checklists, numbering, letters and worklist layouts are yours to configure too.
We share a crematorium with a neighbouring organisation. Does that work?
Yes. A site can be shared: guests see the schedule and book into it, and see that a slot is taken without seeing whose booking it is. Records are never shared.
What does the AI assistant do?
It answers questions about your own data, how to use Epilog Cloud, and what a figure or term means, with links to the right page. It is read-only, only sees what you can see, and can be switched off.
How is Epilog Cloud priced?
Every organisation is different, so we price Epilog Cloud around your sites, services and the modules you need. Get in touch for a proposal.
Does Epilog Cloud support multi-factor authentication and single sign-on?
Yes. Every user can protect their sign-in with multi-factor authentication, using a time-based code from an authenticator app. Single sign-on with your organisation’s own identity provider lets staff sign in with the account they already have.
Deceased Online
Preserving your registers, using the records and opening them to the public.
What is Deceased Online?
Deceased Online hosts burial and cremation records for councils and private organisations. It preserves them online and makes them searchable by families, historians and genealogists.
Do we need to use Epilog Cloud?
No. Records from any software, spreadsheets or paper registers can go on Deceased Online. We take the information you hold and upload it for you.
Can the digitised records go into our management system?
Yes. Once your registers are digitised, the records can be brought into your bereavement management system, whether that is Epilog Cloud or another, so historical and current records sit together.
Who deals with the public?
Deceased Online does. Searches, orders and questions about the records are handled for you, so they do not land on your team.
How does the revenue share work?
When someone pays to access one of your records on Deceased Online, your service receives a share of that revenue. Get in touch and we will take you through the terms.
What does our team need to do?
Very little. Send us the records you hold and we prepare, upload, host and support them. If they are still on paper, Manuscripti can digitise them first.
I am looking for someone. Where do I search?
Search the records at deceasedonline.com, by name, place and date.
Manuscripti
Restoring, digitising and transcribing historic records.
What is Manuscripti?
Manuscripti is part of the Gower group. It restores, scans and transcribes historic documents, from burial and cremation registers to old books, ledgers and hand-drawn plans.
What kinds of documents can Manuscripti digitise?
Bound registers and books, loose papers, and large plans and maps. Large sheets are captured on a physical large-format scanner, and handwritten entries are transcribed by hand, including difficult old handwriting.
Can Manuscripti turn our hand-drawn cemetery plans into digital maps?
Yes. Plans are traced into accurate vector maps, plot by plot. They can be used in Epilog Cloud mapping for full historic tracking, or in your own mapping software.
Do we need Epilog Cloud to use Manuscripti?
No. Manuscripti works with any organisation, whatever system you use. Most digitised burial and cremation registers go on to Deceased Online, but where your records go is your choice.
Is it only for bereavement services?
No. Manuscripti digitises and restores any kind of historic record. Visit manuscripti.net to find out more.
